You don’t have to visit during peak tourist season to enjoy a day in southern Maine. One of my favorites is to start in Wells and power up with some one of a kind treats at:
Perkins Cove Candies in Wells. These handcrafted candies are some of the best I have ever had and the family is so kind. Take a few minutes to ask about their history. It’s fascinating! Then, just up the road is the entrance to Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, with beautiful footpaths that are perfectly groomed and easy to follow. Signage along the path explains the beautiful views you see and the history of the refuge. It’s a fantastic kid-friendly walk that is also welcoming to well-behaved and leashed dogs. Finally, if you still have some energy left, try going just a few minutes further down the road to visit the beautiful St. Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery Estate. This peaceful path is filled with more beautiful views and gardens galore. It is a peaceful end to a busy day. I highly recommend all three of these places on your next family vacation.
