Dinner at Ralphs--Ralph Lauren's New York City Polo Bar

The toughest reservation to get in the city is the Polo Bar, but let’s begin with the man. He didn’t just sell clothes he sold the American dream.

Ralph Lauren transformed a lifestyle into a global empire.  He wasn’t born in Paris or Milan.   In 1939 he was born in the Bronx,  Ralph Lifshitz entered the world as the son of immigrant parents with more ambition than money.   He would go on to reinvent not just his name, but his identity–and even the definition of luxury itself– to build a brand now worth $7.5 billion.

But his story didn’t begin with opulent silks or Parisian fashion houses.   It began with something far simpler: selling neckties.

Ralph didn’t design for the rich,  he designed the idea of being rich.  His ads told stories– sprawling estates in Cape Cod, polo matches on manicured lawns, yachts gliding under the sun.

Even if his customers were office clerks or secretaries, they could buy a tie and feel like they owned a piece of that dream.

In the mid ’70s he dressed the cast of the Paramount film “The Great Gatsby”.   Overnight Robert Redford’s elegance became a look the world craved.   Gatsby’s style wasn’t just cinematic anymore it was something you could wear.

Ralph never played polo a day in his life… yet a shirt with his tiny embroidered polo player would come to sell for $300.

Ralph sold belonging.  Buying Polo wasn’t just about clothes– it was an invitation to join an exclusive club.

Ralph Lauren didn’t just create fashion, he created a story people still want to live in . The man who dressed the world in his most elegant fantasy.

He sold timelessness.  His designs have barely changed since the 1980s, yet they still feel modern.

He sold Illusions–beautifully.   That vintage sweater you thrifted for $15,  he sells it now for $500 and people happily pay.

If you’ve ever dreamed of dressing like your life belonged on a glossy magazine cover you’ve probably bought his clothes.

So you might think the crowd at the Polo Bar would be annoyingly preppy,  but beautiful people businessmen and power lunches are always present.

Ralph never wanted it to be the influencers hotspot it has become. Rod Stewart, Meg Ryan, Lee Radziwell, Chris Hemsworth, Taylor Swift, Drew Barrymore, Rihanna, Derek Jeter, Naomi Campbell, the Rockefellers and the Bronfman’s all gather here, while Mr Lauren often sits surveying the scene.

It’s a beautiful, cozy, classy place with oil paintings depicting the racehorses Man o’ War and Citation, and clubby leather  banquettes. With a menu of American Classics like burgers, ribeye and corned beef sandwiches,  the food is exceptional.

There is a video attached that might help you to make a reservation, good luck.
