Just a short detour from U.S. Route 1 in Henderson, North Carolina, you’ll find a pair of enormous concrete legs sticking straight out of the ground. They’re about 17 feet tall, impossible to miss once you know where to look, and appropriately accompanied by a pair of giant high-heeled shoes across the street.
Known locally as the Giant Legs of Henderson, the sculpture is the work of local backhoe operator and folk artist Ricky Pearce. It’s strange, funny, completely unexpected, and exactly the sort of roadside discovery that makes getting off Route 1 worthwhile.
So…Why the Giant Legs?
The sculpture is called “Reminiscing,” a name displayed on an arch beneath the towering legs.
Pearce reportedly drew inspiration from Marilyn Monroe and her famous windblown-dress scene in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch. But rather than recreating Monroe herself, Pearce went considerably more abstract and built a gigantic pair of shapely concrete legs.
The sculpture has been standing on Welcome Avenue since around 2004 and has gradually become one of Henderson’s oddest landmarks. At roughly 17 feet tall, the legs tower over visitors who stop for photographs. Apparently, though, something was missing.
Of Course There Are Giant Shoes
Across the street you’ll find another Ricky Pearce creation: an enormous pair of high-heeled shoes. Because if you’re going to put 17-foot legs in your yard, you might as well commit to the idea.
Together, the legs and shoes have become an unofficial roadside attraction, drawing curious travelers who hear about them online or happen to discover them while exploring the area. There’s no elaborate visitor center. No admission booth. No hour-long guided tour. It’s essentially a wonderfully strange piece of North Carolina folk art sitting in a residential neighborhood. Take a picture, appreciate someone’s willingness to turn a ridiculous idea into several tons of concrete, and get back on the road.
Why It’s Worth the Stop
The Giant Legs aren’t historically significant in the same way as a battlefield, old highway, or colonial building. That’s exactly why they belong on Route1Views.
Roadside attractions have been part of American driving culture almost as long as Americans have been taking road trips. Giant objects, unusual sculptures, odd buildings, and homemade attractions gave motorists a reason to pull over, and gave towns something travelers would remember long after they left.
