There’s no need to keep skeletons in the closet at the 106 year old Casa Marina Resort, because Key West is one of the most haunted cities in the U.S.
If you think you saw something, you probably did.
The resort was built by railroad tycoon Henry Flagler and opened on New Year’s Eve in 1920. He intended the resort to accommodate wealthy customers of his railroad and legends say his spirit lingers because the building uses the same concrete as his famous Overseas Railway bridges.
During the 1920’s and Prohibition, celebrities like Ethel Merman, Enzo Pinza, Rita Hayworth, Gregory Peck, band leader Guy Lombardo, Rudy Vallee, John Phillips Sousa, poets Wallace Stevens and Robert Frost, along with mobsters like Al Capone, stayed at the property leading paranormal storytellers to connect their past to modern ghostly tales.
In 1942 the property was bought by eminent domain by U.S. Navy and used as officers’ quarters for the duration of World War II and in 1961 they installed missiles directed at Cuba and surrounded the property with barbed wire.
Most of the spiritual activity claims to take place on the 2nd floor of the hotel, where a man in striped pajamas appeared, ringing unplugged phones, hearing children play, faint voices, unexplained footsteps, shifting shadows, doors opening and closing, lights flickering and overall uneasy vibes coming from several guest rooms.
With it’s spooky old world style arches and Gothic like dark wood-paneled lobby,
lush gardens and one of the finest private beaches in Key West, even at over a century old the Casa Marina Curio Collection by Hilton welcomes guests from around the world today and is part of the Ghost Tour of the Conch Republic.
