Tom Jenkins BBQ - Fort Lauderdale
When you’re heading along US 1 near Fort Lauderdale and you get a hankering for some down home Southern Smoke BBQ, Tom Jenkins BBQ is the place, on the Federal Highway about 1/2 mile North of the tunnel under the Fort Lauderdale International Airport.
In 1990 a couple of former fraternity brothers, Harry Harrell and Gary Torrence started selling their barbecue sauce via a roadside food trailer on the weekends. With the loyal customer base they opened a restaurant right across the street from their stand in 1996.
Tasty Offerings
Their meat pulls easily from the bone and is relatively tender. The ribs are muscular enough to offer all the flavor of a good chew.
Everything is smoked here, from the rack of spare ribs or baby backs, chicken, turkey, pork and plump sausages.
The Mississippi fried catfish is awesome, and the Soul Food fixings like cornbread, hush puppies, collards, onion rings and more, all go well with a glass of sweet tea or lemonade.
Big Time bonus is their peach cobbler and sweet potato pie, like my mama used to make.
The barbecue sauces here are so good you want to drink them right out of the bottle, try their Original and Country Gold that started it all.
Deets:
Closed Sunday (“gone to church”) and Monday (“gone fishin'”).
Which Tom Jenkins is this place named after; the singer, the golfer, the professional wrestler, or the actor? Or maybe someone you can’t Google?
