Roadway Bridge design in 1918 in Auburn, RI

The Elmwood Avenue Bridge (Route 1) over the Pawtuxet River. Engineers were quickly adapting new methodologies to handle the increase in automobile and truck traffic along Route 1. Note that the bridge was widened in 1931 to accommodate the increase in traffic, but not for long! By 1958, only 1500 feet west, a new high speed bypass with 4 lanes of traffic and limited access ramps had opened.
In the Wickford Library, I found this wonderful book containing photos and historical tidbits about the bridges in Rhode Island, particularly those with engineering significance.
