The Colony Hotel - Kennebunkport, ME
The Colony Hotel is a luxury hotel in Kennebunkport, Maine. It was built on the site of the Ocean Bluff Hotel, which opened in 1872. Architect John Calvin Stevens designed the Colony and it opened in 1914. It was originally known as The Breakwater Court.
George Boughton purchased the hotel in 1947. Boughton owned the Colony Hotel in Delray Beach, Florida and wanted to complement it with one in the north. It was renamed the Colony Hotel when it reopened for the summer in 1948.
The Colony is known for its elegant guest rooms and suites, many of which feature views of the ocean and the hotel’s lush gardens. The hotel also offers a variety of amenities, such as a swimming pool, a fitness center, and a spa. It also has a small private beach, which guests can access. The hotel is in the heart of Kennebunkport and is close to many popular attractions, such as the Kennebunkport Marina and the Bush family compound.
It is one of the Historic Hotels of America, which is a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, that identifies hotels that have maintained their architectural integrity and hold historic value. As of 2022, there are 273 hotels in the program.
