44th Annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration Key West
Get ready because Key West is preparing for their annual Conch Republic Independence Day Celebration April 17-26 featuring the world’s longest parade (from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf), a sea battle reenactment and tons of parties.
The Conch Republic is a tongue-in-cheek “micro-nation” that was established on April 23rd, 1982 when Key West declared itself to be an independent from the United States.
Now this all began because the U.S. Border Patrol In peak overkill mode set up a checkpoint on Route 1, the only road connecting Key West to the mainland in 1982, stopping all traffic entering and leaving the Keys as part of a federal effort to crack down on illegal drug smuggling.
They treated Key West like it was crossing the border from Mexico, searching the trunks, killing businesses, grilling the tourists and the hotels just emptied.
While The Key West city council protested the blockade, their complaints fell on deaf ears. In response, Key West mayor Dennis Wardlow and a group of local businessmen formed the Conch Republic, a new nation. They figured if they were going to torpedo their economy and treat them like a foreign country, we’ll become one They even went as far to surrender to the federal government and then declared war for one minute, and then requested a billion dollars in foreign aid.
They made a flag with the motto “We Seceded Where Others Failed”, printed passports, threw a parade and a party about it and began selling t shirts.
The feds were embarrassed, the media ate it up and the blockade disappeared faster than a tourist with sun poisoning.
Today the movement has become a symbol of the island’s Independence, it’s laid back free-spirited lifestyle and its unique blend of cultures. The Conch Republic’s flag, which features a conch shell on a blue and yellow background can be seen flying all over the island and every April Key West hosts a 10 day Conch Republic Independence Celebration, which includes parties, parades and other events.
So drive on down Route 1 for some Key West humor, warmth and respect.
