Comic books stores always were a bit of their own counterculture; even now, with Marvel movies having brought superheroes firmly into the mainstream, places that sell actual books about them can be a bit hard to find and each has their own personality.
Coast City Comics & The Fun Box Monster Emporium definitely has more of a punk rock vibe than most! From the wild checkered floor tile to the pins for your jacket or backpack to the shelves crammed with all sorts of eclectic goods, it’s hard not to find something you like. There are retro toys, horror movie paraphernalia, magnets, candies, clothes, blu rays, board games, and – of course – comic books galore. There’s even pinball machines in the back and ephemera from old TV shows and cartoons.
Congress Street is full of cool stores, but Coast City & The Fun Box Monster Emporium stand out among them. You could easily spend over an hour sifting through their curated selection, even if you’re not into comic books. Be sure to note their store rules attached to the plexiglass in front of the register: no Proud Boys, no taking off clothes in the shop, and no spilling drinks. Probably some interesting stories there.
We wound up getting some refrigerator magnets with old Nintendo box art on them and my wife bought a book of Garfield Mad Libs for our niece. The guy at the counter seemed a little incredulous that in a store of so many neat things, she had chosen Garfield Mad Libs, but the (niece’s) heart wants what it wants, and I guess this is a testament to how many different types of people can find something they want there. Definitely worth the visit if you’re in the area!
