Back when I was a young man (1975), we would frolicking in the James River near Ashland and slide down the smooth rocks that formed a natural waterfall. What a wonderful pleasure on a hot humid day in VA. My grandfather talked a little about the old No 1 highway as he was one of the first in 1916 to volunteer for WW1.

Maybe you played in the Anna River near the Ashland Mill? The James would seem to be a long way from Ashland. Great memories of your grandad!!!
