Dog Days of Summer at the Hog's Breath Saloon- Key West
On a quieter corner down from Duval Street, where the air carries equal parts salt and live guitar, sits the legendary Hog’s Breath Saloon– a place as welcoming to four-legged visitors as it is to their human companions.
Dogs here love the Hog, just as much as humans. Since 1988, a cozy watering hole where friends can unwind after long days of sailing, fishing and diving, the Hog has been a place where dogs are treated as part of the family.
The saloon’s open air design makes it perfect for pups, with shade from old wooden beams and the constant Gulf breeze cutting the heat.
Dogs sprawl happily at their owner’s feet while bands play blues, rock or island tunes on the stage. Bowls of cool water are set out for canine guests and bartenders or servers are quick to offer a scratch behind the ears or slip a hot dog to a wagging tail.
Over the years the Hog’s Breath has become a kind of unofficial gathering place for dog lovers in Key West. Locals bring their retrievers and terriers after a long walk along the harbor, while tourists snap photos of their pups lounging under the saloon’s iconic Hog logo.
During special events like the famous Fantasy Fest Parade, dogs in costumes sometimes steal the spotlight from even the most elaborate human outfits.
Offering some of the best fresh seafood and cocktails on the island, with live music all day long, you almost always can spot a dog stretched out by the stage or wagging at a passerby.
This place is a reminder of what makes Key West itself so beloved, laid-back, opened-armed and always ready to welcome every traveler, two or four legged.
Music that will have you snort- laughing, cocktails that are lick your lips good, fresh oysters and a plate of conch fritters are a great way to spend an afternoon or evening.
Have the bartender fix you a Hogarita and remember right down off Route 1, Hog’s Breath is better than no breath at all.
