Sail 4th 250 is a massive Maritime Celebration acting as a centerpiece commemorating America’s semi-quincentennial celebration.
The ships moved through five host ports beginning May 28th with New Orleans, to Norfolk, then Baltimore to New York Harbor and Boston through July 14th.
This was an epic gathering of the world’s most magnificent international tall ships, historic character vessels and military naval ships.
This extraordinary armada of nearly 50 sailing ships was a breathtaking procession of some of the largest most magnificent tall ships from around the world, representing 42 countries with over 15,000 sailors in port. Some of the ships being over 300 feet long and up to a 175 feet tall.
More than 220 years since America gained its independence, the legendary “Old Ironsides” (the name given by the sailors of the U.S.S. Constitution during the War of 1812 when British cannonballs slammed into her hull and bounced off) lead the procession sailing into New York Harbor past the majestic Statue of Liberty between the Verrazano Bridge and the George Washington Bridge.
Shortly after arriving to the area where the ships’ anchored for free public ship tours, over 200 military aircraft flew overhead as over 6 million spectators gathered to see this once in a lifetime event.
This international gathering of great ships was a powerful tribute to our shared maritime heritage and enduring spirit of freedom that has united sailors and nations for centuries.
