Elephant Herd Off Route 1 - Miami Beach
Set against the shimmering Atlantic and South Beach’s iconic lifeguard towers, 100 elephants were stampeding onto Miami Beach.
They’re not real pachyderms of course, these are wooden and part of the Great Elephant Migration, an art exhibit sharing a message about conservation and human wildlife coexistence.
An international collaboration between indigenous artisans, contemporary artists and cultural institutions.
The adventure started in Nilgiri Hills, India, where the idea of the art installation took shape and the elephants were made.
It has been dubbed a “stop-in-your- tracks art installation. The concept for the great elephant migration has been in development for over a decade.
The sculptures are crafted from Lantana an invasive weed in India’s forest that displaces wildlife.  By converting the weed into art, the project not only supports conservation but also provides sustainable employment for local artisans.
Each sculpture is modeled after a real elephant, capturing their unique personalities, character, age, and even tusks, from playful calves to majestic adults measuring up to 15 feet long.
People walk amongst the herd and experience their awesome presence and beauty, and visualize the places in the world where people live alongside these giants.
Miami’s lively entertainment added unexpected drama, as a couple was caught having “loud sex” on top of one of the elephant sculptures, security escorted them off but no arrests.
The exhibit is now touring the United States.
