Eerie Legends Surround the Witch's Wall - Palm Beach
On the southwest corner of the elite Palm Beach Country Club, you will find Coral Cut, also known as the Witch’s Wall.
Homes in this area are valued in the $10-35 million range.
The Coral Cut slices right through a massive 20 foot high wall of coquina stone, the byproduct of millennia of sea life stacking atop itself, fossilizing and decaying into a solid mass.
This man-made little Florida canyon was carved in 1916 after a hurricane washed out roads and cut off the top half of the island of Palm Beach from the bottom half.
According to legend, a family took the hard left turn into the cut too quickly, smashed into the wall, and their ghosts now haunt the road.
Another story is that an evil stepmother imprisoned a young girl in the wall, and if you look closely to a door in the wall when the light is just right, you can see her shape in there, silhouetted and alone, wanting to get out, or perhaps waiting to lure you in there with her. Spooky.
The most popular story is that a witch lived on top of the hill and would lure children to the wall, imprisoning them behind a small gated door.
It’s the door that freaks people out. To spot it you’ve got to look quickly as you’re driving the narrow two lane Country Club road, watching for oncoming traffic on one side of you and looming gray coral walls on the other. Look quickly there on the south side, just before the gate, that looks for all the world like the bars of a medieval prison.
Enhanced by the fact that the road is very narrow and dark, with only a single light illuminating the gated window at night, the spot is well liked during Halloween.
