Ghost Vibes at the Blue Anchor Pub.-Delray beach

The Blue Anchor Pub is a spirited place indeed, it was actually built-in London in the 1840s,  during Jack the Ripper times.   It’s been rumored that two of his former victims spent their last nights on earth in the Blue Anchor British pub.

The evening of September 29th 1888, would be Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowe’s last on the foggy streets of London. After refreshing themselves inside the pub, they ventured into the night in search of a client to pay for their services.   By 1 am, Elizabeth Stride’s body would be found in a devastating condition and a mere 45 minutes later, Catherine’s would be discovered as well, disfigured beyond recognition.

Jack the Ripper, a figure whose identity is still unknown to this day, was the heinous perpetrator behind these crimes.

Was he too among the patrons of the Blue Anchor Pub that desolate evening in London?

Bertha Starkey lived above the bar with her husband, who was gone for long lengths of time due to work  One night while her husband was away, Bertha invited a gentleman over for a visit–her husband came home early, found the two in a compromising position and murdered them both.

For over a century the pub has been haunted by the ghost of the young Bertha Starkey.

Years later, the bar was deconstructed and its facade and rich wood interior features were disassembled and shipped to New York city.  They were stored there until 1996, when they were brought to Delray beach along with the ghost of Bertha.

To this day, around 10 pm, which is when Bertha’s murder took place, it’s when people normally hear her footsteps.   At night after closing, candles light and extinguish themselves along with banging pots and pans and the sound of Bertha’s spine chilling wails.

It’s located just a half block from the intercoastal bridge, ( a 10 minute walk) and you’re standing in the sand on the beach.

Usually packed for happy hour, the pints and fish and chips, as you would expect here,  are awesome.

Come get your spook on right off Route 1.
