The century old La Concha Hotel is widely considered by ghost lore and local legend to be one of the most haunted hotels in Key West.
Its history is full of tragic and spooky events beginning with the Rooftop Bar Spirits.
Local folklore states that as many as 13 unlucky people have committed suicide by jumping from the roof over the decades.
Legends claim a mischievous ghost up on the upper levels likes to swipe glasses of chardonnay, straight out of the hands of unsuspecting guests.
In the 1980’s a young busboy cleaning upstairs after a New Year’s Eve party tragically lost his life when he accidentally backed into an open elevator shaft on the fifth floor and died instantly.
Guests and staff today report that the elevator frequently stops on the fifth floor on its own and some claim to hear phantom cries for help or see an apparition wheeling a service cart before vanishing into a wall.
Built in 1926 on Duval Street at 6 stories, it was the tallest building on the island.
The La Concha had a number of remarkable guests such as Tennessee Williams, Harry Truman and of course. Ernest Hemingway.
Hemingway said he always enjoyed spotting La Concha, coming into view as he was heading back into Key West after a long day fishing in the Gulf Stream on his boat “Pilar”. He loved watching sunsets from the top floor bar, where you could walk around and see so much of Key West that was out of sight when down below on the street. The bar upstairs now houses a spa and place to watch the sunrise.
Hemingway frequently stayed at the hotel and guests staying in the suite named after him have reported anomalous paranormal events such as moving furniture, flying objects, shaking beds and the television, lights and faucets turning on by themselves.
Today, the La Concha Hotel is part of the Marriott. Autograph Collection and the Key West Ghost Tour.
