In Honor of Memorial Day

This is the monument erected in the Larchmont, New York Memorial Park by the Larchmont Post of the American Legion in the memory and in gratitude for the people from the Larchmont area that sacrificed their lives in World War 2, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  The small World War 1 sign, in the center of this monument, looks like this was created by the Larchmont Post of the American Legion, and was used in an earlier created monument.

The next-to-last name on the list from WWI , Joyce Kilmer,  was killed at the age of 31 by a sniper’s bullet.  Although Kilmer was born on Route 1 in New Brunswick, NJ., he volunteered for duty with the 69th infantry regiment of New York.  Kilmer was a noted poet, journalist and writer who left behind 5 children.  His birthplace in New Brunswick houses a small museum in his honor.  He is also memorialized at the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, which is part of the Nantahala National Forest in Western North Carolina, on a plaque in Central Park, and at a rest stop on the New Jersey Turnpike which bears his name.
