Journey to the Schnebly Redlands Winery and Brewery in Homestead
Heading south on Route 1 for the Keys, you just might want to stop in Homestead, Florida on the edge of the Everglades for some liquid libations, surrounded by waterfalls and Tiki huts.
Nope you’re not in Margaritaville, but Schnebly Redlands Winery and Brewery, the southernmost Winery in the United States.
Started in 2003 by former produce farmers Peter and Denisse Schnebly, they experimented with making wine from tropical fruit in their garage. No grapes required– besides Florida is just too hot for growing grapes.
Their formal Winery opened in October of 2005, on a 30 acre farm complete with coral limestone waterfalls and Tiki Huts, covering 20,000 ft, built from materials native to South Florida.
Specializing in non-grape fruit wines made from mangoes, lychee, guava, passion fruit, avocado, carambola, star fruit and coconut — flavors you won’t find anywhere else in the United States.
In 2011 they expanded again with the Miami Brewing Company, pioneering craft beer in Miami-Dade with flavors like Shark Bait, Big Rod, Gator Tail and Miami Vice IPA, infused with local tropical ingredients.
The winery is a lush landscape, where guests wander through gardens, koi ponds, natural waterfalls and walkways shaded by palm trees and tiki huts.
The tasting area feels like a peaceful retreat, where guided tours typically running 30 to 40 minutes, share the couple’s farm history and production process, followed by guided tastings of five wines g or $9.95.
Beyond tastings Schnebly hosts events– live music, Latin dance nights, outdoor movie nights, special brunches and celebrations.
In the scenic Tiki Pavilions, the Redlander restaurant, a large Tiki style eatery offers farm to table seasonal menus for brunch, lunch and dinner.
They have 16 different wines to choose from.
A quick escape off Route 1 if you’ve got a hankering for something sweet.
