Legendary Cocolobo Cay Club-Homestead Florida
The Cocolobo Cay Club was one of the most secluded and prestigious private clubs in the country, and was the perfect place for presidents to disappear from public eye.
It was located on an island off Route 1 just south of Miami, called Adam’s Key.
At one time, it was called Cocolobo Key, and served as the hideout for Black Caesar, the most famous of the gulf pirates during the buccaneering days of the mid 1800’s.
By the turn of the century, the island began to build its notoriety as an exclusive fishing club that hosted presidents and numerous Washington elite.
Miami millionaire and entrepreneur Carl Fisher bought the island in 1916 and built a two-story club building with 10 guestrooms, a dining room, a recreation lodge and dockings.
Original members included Warren Harding, T. Coleman Dupont, Harvey Firestone, Jack Dempsey, and Will Roger’s.
Herbert Hoover, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Baines Johnson, John F Kennedy and numerous senators became regulars.
It definitely became the destination for the rich and politically well connected.
The Cocoa Lobo Cay Club was also a true sanctuary for the pioneers of sport fishing. This exclusive club was more than just a place to fish, it was a gathering ground for passionate anglers, adventurers and visionaries who pushed the limits of big game fishing.
The main building burned down in 1974 while the remaining structures were destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Of course, what now remains is part of Biscayne National Park.

Yeah Andrew was Badass!

Hurricane Andrew did an impressive amount of damage. I visited Florida City, just south of Homestead, 4 months after the storm blew through. I'd never seen a palm tree snapped in half & there were scores of them in one particular field I can recall on our way through Homestead.
