Lynyrd Skynyrd's Infamous Jug Saloon- Jacksonville
When a bunch of ass-kicking redneck, whiskey rock and rollers from Jacksonville, Florida formed a band called Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of their greatest hits was the story of a real life situation band leader Ronnie Van Zant had at a bar when a guy pulled a gun on him for dancing with another man’s woman.
When Ronnie was telling the story to another band member, Gary Rossington, they had to change the name of the bar to better fit the lyrics of the song.
“I was cutting the rug down at a place called the Jug with a girl named Linda Lu, when in walked a man with a gun in his hand and he was looking for you know who”.
Today there still is a biker bar in a garage on the westside of Jacksonville that claims the mantle of “Gimme Three Steps” fated setting.
As you open your car door in the parking lot full of bikes, you smell cigarettes. This is a true dive bar, as you walk through a short porch under an orange sign with the bar name and a motorcycle.
The garage door makes it feel like you’re drinking in a friend’s garage.
An L shaped bar sits in the middle of the room filled with friendly bartenders and patrons. With concrete floors and stark interior, it’s cash only and they only serve beer and seltzers with bar food with specials.
There’s a red-felted pool table, a pair of digital dart boards with corn hole out in the back surrounded by astroturf.
Quintessential embodient of local charm and community spirits.
This beloved staple in north Florida is worth the trip, and when was the last time you paid $3.00 for a beer?
