Revisiting the Golden Days of Arcades At Game Gallery
Though video games and pinball machines are not given the same consideration as other forms of entertainment such as films, they have been an undeniable influence on American culture for decades. With the introduction of the first two arcade games – Computer Space (1971) and Pong (1972) – arcades evolved into a popular hangout spot where people could improve their hand-eye coordination while beating up their friends playing Street Fighter II.
During the 1980s and 1990s, home consoles were always a step behind the newest technological advancements and experiences in arcades, but that gradually began to shift as consoles like the Playstation offered comparable experiences at home. Since the 2000s, arcades declined in popularity and many have closed.
Many people are rediscovering how great arcades are, though: not just as a place to revisit beloved classics like Burger Time and Galaga, but to socialize. Pinball machines still have a core, dedicated group of enthusiasts who participate in tournaments, and younger generations can experience a bit of history while trying out now-ancient amusements such as Frogger and even challenge friends to analog games like air hockey.
Game Galleryin Langhorne, PA, is one such place, featuring an excellent and diverse collection of pinball games, arcade cabinets, light gun games, and even favorites like skee-ball. Unlike the arcades of yesteryear, however, in which players had to keep a steady supply of quarters to play, entrants pay a flat fee of $15 for the first hour and $5 each additional hour. This reasonable rate allows visitors to experiment with games that they might not have otherwise tried, and takes a lot of the frustration out of the experience for newcomers. There are also plenty of retro games for sale, if you’d like to go home with a souvenir.
Game Gallery is an excellent stopover as you travel Route 1: a place to get out, stretch your legs, and clear your mind while reminiscing about the glory days of arcades. I recommend giving it a shot – you’ll be glad you did.
