Road Crimp in New Hill, NC

When the need for extra lanes of traffic on Route 1 arose after World War II gasoline rationing was lifted, Road engineers often found their hands were tied. Previous rights-of-way, particularly by railways created places where there wasn’t space to fit any more lanes. In a very similar way, older downtown “Main Streets” couldn’t be widened because of the storefronts and the need for street parking and loading. The answer was to bypass the road crimp with a modern 4-lane limited access highway.
