Roadside Fun Since 1927: Perry’s Nut House, Belfast, Maine

If you’re headed along Route 1 through Belfast, you can’t miss the giant painted signs and whimsical animal statues inviting you into Perry’s Nut House. Since 1927, this quirky stop has been luring travelers with homemade fudge, classic candies, and oddball roadside curiosities — making it one of Maine’s longest-running tourist attractions.

The exterior still retains its vintage roadside charm, complete with a massive moose, a gorilla, and other oversized animals, perfect for quick photos. Inside, you’ll find cases of creamy fudge made on-site, roasted nuts, saltwater taffy, and a wall of old-fashioned candy. In the back, glass cases hold a rotating selection of oddities and taxidermy, giving a nod to the store’s original “cabinet of curiosities” vibe.

    Why It’s Worth the Stop

Perry’s Nut House is part gift shop, part candy store, and part time machine. You can browse Maine-themed souvenirs, grab a pound of their famous fudge, or wander the aisles marveling at the mix of treats and collectibles. The real charm is how little the place has changed in nearly a century; it’s pure nostalgia for anyone who grew up road-tripping the Maine coast.

Being right on Route 1 means it’s an easy stop to stretch your legs, grab a snack, and snap a few photos before hitting the road again.
