    Statues and Memorials of Boston Common - Boston, MA

    Boston Common is a historic public park in Boston, Massachusetts, and is the oldest public park in the United States. It was purchased from William Blackstone in 1634 by the Puritan Colonists and was ordered that it would not be for private use in 1640. The park has a rich history and has played a significant role in the social and political life of the city.

    There are several statues and memorials within the Boston Common, each with its own history and significance. Some of the notable ones include:

    • The Robert Gould Shaw and 54th Regiment Memorial, which honors the African American soldiers who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. The statue was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was dedicated in 1897.
    • The World War II Memorial, which was erected in 1951 to honor the soldiers who served in World War II. The memorial includes a fountain and a statue of a soldier, and is near the Tremont Street entrance to the park.
    • The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, which was erected in 1877 to honor the soldiers and sailors who served in the Civil War. The monument includes a statue of a soldier and is near the Tremont Street entrance to the park. Civil War Generals McClellan and Hooker were present at its dedication.
    • Nurses of the Allied Services Memorial, which was dedicated in November 1959 and is on Flagstaff Hill near the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. .
    • The WWI Mine Monument, which was dedicated on October 26, 1921 by the North Sea Mine Force Association. The memorial is a modified Mark VI mine that was deployed by the U.S. Navy in the North Sea during World War 1.

     The park is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, and its statues and memorials are a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of the city of Boston.
