Step Back in Time at Colburn’s: America’s Oldest Shoe Store in Belfast, ME

A shoe store might not seem like the most likely destination for a trip along Route 1, but Colburn’s Shoe Store in Belfast, Maine, has an interesting distinction: it’s the oldest continuously operating shoe store in the United States. Established in 1832 by W.T. Colburn, it has remained in the family for nearly two centuries, passed down over five generations.

When you enter, you might think that it looks a lot like other shoe stores – until you consider the fact that shoe stores are pretty rare these days! Many have vanished as online shopping and big box retailers eroded their customer base. The opportunity to be assisted in fitting and selection feels like a bit of a luxury. The prices are very reasonable (and there’s a sale section in the basement that you won’t want to miss), but what sets Colburn’s apart – aside from it’s age – is the commitment to customer service. It’s what has kept them open for so long! They also take pride in community involvement and supporting charities.

While you’re deciding which of the dozens of major shoe brands you’d like to try/buy, don’t overlook the details of the store itself. Historical photos and ads are framed on the wall, the pressed tin ceilings are still intact, and I was informed that the shelves and ladders are original.

Buying new shoes might not be something you’ve given a lot of consideration to in the past, but supporting family-owned local businesses is what keeps them open. A chain shoe outlet probably doesn’t care much about the town they are located in, and will close the store and lay off workers whenever it suits them. That’s why so many come and go. A local business, however, thrives on personal connections, reputation, and quality. If you’re going to be in the Belfast area and you’d like some new footwear, stop by Colburn’s. I found their staff to be friendly and helpful, and happy to chat about their extensive history. Places like Colburn Shoe Store are what makes travel so special and fun!

Colby actually cares about how my feet feel. I won't buy shoes anywhere else. I even have a friend, who comes up from Boston to buy shoes there. Funny story... I stopped in on Monday to order a pair of shoes. Colby checked the ones I was wearing and we found it in other colors, on his computer. We ordered. I left to shop at The Co-op, a block away. As I was waiting to check out, all of a sudden there was a signal... a loud emergency type signal, coming from my jacket pocket!!! My phone does not make that signal! I pulled what I thought was my phone out of my pocket and was facing something I had never seen!!! Thank God the person in line behind me, knew how to turn off the signal and how to call the owner of this "not my" phone. I had picked up Colby's phone , when we were researching shoes. I promised to bring it back as soon as I paid for my groceries. I finally got back to Colburns, and held up the phone and said to Colby, "I've got a phone here to trade for a pair of shoes!!!!" He said, "We'll see." with a laugh.
