The Magic of the Games of Yesterday Is Still Alive At Yestercades
Considering how much time we spend on the road at Route 1 Views, we’re always looking for a good spot to stop for an hour or two to stretch out and enjoy ourselves before continuing our journey. If you’re over 30, chances are you have at least a few fond memories of arcades, but may not have been to one for a while. Yestercades in Metuchen, NJ, is a great place to rectify that!
At Yestercades, you’ll find that they’ve ditched the quarter-munching payment model once ubiquitous in arcades for a much less frustration-inducing flat fee: $9.95 per hour, or $27.95 for the entire day. Compared to many flat fee arcades, this is a pretty reasonable price, and gives you a chance to hone your skills at a particularly tricky pinball machine without worrying too much if you lose.
Aside from arcade classics like Tetris and Donkey Kong, you’ll find a solid selection of pinball games, racing cabinets, pool and air hockey tables, and even a lounge where kids can play modern home console games if older classics like Robotron are too unforgiving. The environment is clean and appealing, with a great sense of style that really taps into the nostalgic vibe older patrons will appreciate.
As one such older patron, I was pleasantly surprised (as I often am at modern arcades) by how many young folks are enjoying themselves – tots with their parents, teens with their friends or their dates – which always brings a smile to my face. After all, arcades aren’t just places to have fun – like it or not, they’re a part of history now, a museum of entertainment. The fact that these games can still reach audiences decades after they were created is pretty special. If you take a moment to revisit them at Yestercades, I bet you’ll feel that magic too.
