Trumbull Mall’s Comeback Story Isn’t Over Yet

Trumbull Mall is a large retail complex in Connecticut with a long history of ownership changes, redevelopment, and adaptation to shifting consumer trends. Opened in 1964 as the Trumbull Shopping Park, it was notable for being the state’s first fully enclosed shopping center. The project was developed by the Frouge Corporation and initially featured major anchor tenants typical of mid-20th-century suburban retail.

In 1977, the property was acquired by the Westfield Group, marking that company’s entry into the United States market. Over the following decades, the mall underwent several name changes and tenant transitions as department store brands merged, rebranded, or closed. By the late 1990s, it had adopted the Westfield branding, which remained until the early 2020s. During this period, renovations introduced updated amenities, dining options, and new retailers to keep the property competitive.

The early 21st century brought both investment and challenges. A major renovation around 2010 modernized the facility, while new attractions and stores continued to open in subsequent years. However, like many malls, it faced store closures and shifting retail dynamics, especially during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Ownership changes in 2023 signaled a new phase, though financial difficulties soon followed, leading to another management transition in 2025.

Today, the mall remains anchored by major national retailers and continues to evolve. Local officials and stakeholders are actively discussing redevelopment ideas, ranging from expanded entertainment options to mixed-use concepts, reflecting broader efforts to redefine the role of traditional shopping centers.

Currently, the Trumbull Mall still has a mix of food options and retailers to entice prospective shoppers. There are still a number of vacant storefronts, but eye-catching murals and artwork are used to mask their appearance and the lower level appears to be thriving. Trumbull Mall features a pleasant contemporary design and a nice balance of chain retailers and local businesses. While many malls are struggling, hopefully Trumbull Mall will persevere.

I'm sure if you were there during its heyday, it looks very different now - but compared to a large number of other indoor malls, Trumbull could be doing a lot worse. I hope they can figure out how to bring retailers and patrons back.

Yes, you could really tell that a number of stores left, but you're exactly right that there are still more open than I expected before I went
