    Step Aboard History: Explore the USS Orleck in Jacksonville, FL

    Let’s face it there’s something undeniably cool about standing at the controls of a bona-fide warship.

    The USS Orleck was once a formidable force in the United States Navy.   This Gearing-class destroyer now serves a more peaceful purpose,  educating and entertaining those with the penchant for nautical nostalgia.

    The “Top Gun” of Vietnam,  fired over 11,000 rounds,  earning the name “Gray Ghost of the Vietnam Coast”.

    Named after Lieutenant Joseph Orleck Commanding Officer of the USS Nauset,  killed in action on September 9th 1943 during World War II and posthumously awarded the Navy cross.

    From anti-submarine warfare to radar technology, it’s a treasure trove for those fascinated by military innovation.

    As you wander through the narrow corridors and expansive decks you’ll find yourself transported to an era where sailors braved the high seas and the echoes of maritime might.

    It’s these experiences that transform a simple museum visit into a memorable adventure,  sharing tales of valor and camaraderie amongst the artifacts and anecdotes aboard the  USS Orleck.

    Navigating through the museum you’ll encounter numerous exhibits that detail technological advancements and the strategic importance of destroyers like the USS Orleck.

    Venturing below deck the museum brings to life daily routines of the sailors who once called this ship home.

    With each compartment and cabin meticulously preserved,  visitors gain a rare glimpse into the living and working conditions of the America’s naval warriors.

    It’s a hands-on history lesson where touching the bunks,  peering into the mess hall and exploring the engine room are encouraged

    It’s a surefire way to ignite a spark of interest in history that will keep the little ones engaged.

    Open Wednesday through Friday 9:00 to 3:00, Saturday 9:00 to 4:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 4:00.  Admission for adults is $15, $7 for youth 6 to 17.
