The Calais Street Railroad began operating in July of 1894. It was one of four international streetcars to ever operate in the US. Calais shares the border with the Canadian town of St. Stephen, and the streetcars originally were too heavy to cross the wooden bridge connecting the two because the bridge was built for horses and wagons and could not support a streetcar. In 1895 a steel bridge replaced the original wooden one, and the streetcars were able to connect Calais, St. Stephen, and the two Milltowns. 

The fare would cost 5 cents to ride a streetcar, but you could buy 22 for $1.00. A ticket would give the rider more than a 7-mile ride, with 4 miles on the US side and 3 in Canada. 

With the rise of the car and taxi use, the Calais Street Railway ceased operation in 1929.
