Sliders and more at the White Rose Diner in Linden, NJ
Meet Rich and Mindy Belfer, the proprietors of the White Rose Diner for the last 30 years. The diner was one of three original “Rose Diner System” establishments built in northern New Jersey in the 1950s that were sold to three different owners in the 1990s. The Belfers added the “White” to their business name to distinguish themselves from the other Rose Diners. (IG whiterosedinerlinden)
The unassuming eatery at 1301 E Elizabeth Avenue is tiny by today’s standards. A counter of 8 or 10 stools faces the kitchen with a similar number along the front of the diner facing the street. Rich whips up some wonderful food from the small grill you see first when you walk in the door. The menu is a tour de force, with a Route One burger, and other burgers named for the transportation highlights of the area. I was there for breakfast, so I missed out on the highly acclaimed sliders, but thoroughly enjoyed my omelet, hash browns and coffee.
Mindy takes orders at the counter, over the phone and on the internet, fills drink glasses, and keeps the conversation going if there’s ever a lull between customers. The place is very well known, and was busy on Saturday morning. They’ve won an award recently from NJ.com for “Best Diner” (#26) They’ve been featured by Bobby Flay. Conversation was easy since the couple has three grown children living in Philadelphia, which is where I am from.
So if you’re looking for great comfort food with a twist of creativity, get to Linden & visit the White Rose Diner!
