Whether it’s 8:00 in the morning or 11:00 p.m. at night, there’s always a line of people waiting to have their picture taken in front of the Southernmost Point Buoy in Key West Florida.  

Just last week Key West’s most photographed landmark is boarded up behind construction fencing, but a substitute buoy has been erected at a temporary spot a block away.

The buoy has withstood several hurricanes and saltwater has taken its toll on the seawall.   Once the seawall is replaced crews will repaint the original buoy and add landscaping at the corner. 

42 years ago the buoy was erected in 1983 by the city of Key West to establish that the corner of South and Whitehead streets is a mere 90 miles from Cuba. 

The Southernmost Point Buoy in Key West is an anchored concrete buoy marking the southernmost most point in the continental United States.  

The large painted buoy is 18 ft above sea level and is 7 ft wide and 12 ft High.   

Just head south down to the end of Route 1 and it’s located for a year at 1499 Duval Street.
