Walk, Dine, and Explore: The Best of Belfast’s HarborWalk

Whether you’re just looking for a place to stretch your legs during a long car trip or you’re staying in the area and are looking for a beautiful (or romantic!) evening stroll, Belfast’s HarborWalk is a short but memorable place for it.

HarborWalk is about .8 miles on even ground, and takes you through a working shipyard and across the Passawassakeug River via the Belfast Armistice Bridge, which is only open to foot traffic. The Belfast Armistice Bridge was completed in 1921 and named the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge. It is said to be the largest memorial to World War I veterans. In 1963 the new Veteran’s Memorial Bridge was built to reroute traffic from Route 1 and Route 3 – and you’ll get a great view of it from the Belfast Armistice Bridge. The rail trail connects to the south end of the bridge also, so if you’re looking for even more exercise you can continue to follow that until it eventually connects to the Hills to Sea Trail.

Along HarborWalk, you’ll pass Front Street Shipyard and Safe Harbor Front Street, which build and refit yachts and other ships. Sunset is a particularly nice time to make the trip, and as you’re headed back to Belfast, there are multiple options for grabbing a snack or a full meal. Wild Cow Creamery is a great spot for ice cream, gelato, and milkshakes, or you could visit Nautilus Seafood & Grill or Front Street Pub. We checked out the Marshall Wharf Brewing Company and both the food and the drinks were excellent.

Belfast is a lovely small town with great stores, restaurants, and loads of charm to spare, and the HarborWalk is a wonderful feature you won’t want to miss if you’re in the area!
