Right off Route 1 in Port Orange Florida sits not your usual Florida tourist attraction. It’s gritty, dirty, strange and a little unsettling, like frozen in time, like a bad Twilight Zone episode.
But this seedy biker watering hole has the tagline of “Home of Ice Cold Beer and Killer Women”
This was a regular hangout of Aileen Wuornos, one of America’s most notorious female serial killers and she even used this place as her mailing address.
January 9th 1991 found Wuornos here drinking her last beer as a free woman as the bar was full of undercover agents to arrest her for the deaths of seven men across Florida where
she was later convicted of six murders and executed in 2002.
Hollywood came to the Last Resort bar to film “Monster” with Charlize Theron as the crazed killer.
The bar still wears that history unapologetically with newspaper clippings, photographs, graffiti, with macabre memorabilia everywhere. Even the names of her victims are incorporated into a mural outside, a sobering reminder of her very real victims.
The biker dive bar looks far more unassuming then it’s exterior suggests.
You visit a place like this because sometimes history’s darkest chapters survive in the most ordinary looking places.
Of course the backyard isn’t so ordinary with motorcycles hung from a huge oak like a decorated Christmas tree. You have to wonder what those bikers were drinking or smoking that day.
So drop by, have a beer and be somebody. Listen to some stories about Aileen’s spirit that haunts this place and experience some true crime history there.
