Brandywine River Museum of Art
The Brandywine River Museum of Art is the premier collection of the works of American painter Andrew Wyeth and his artistically gifted family. Wyeth, who lived in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania where the museum is located, is best known for his painting Christina’s World, currently in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The fact that Wyeth’s most famous painting is elsewhere shouldn’t deter you from visiting, however: the rest of his work is gorgeous and compelling as well, documenting the people, places, and history of the region in a diverse array of styles. From nature to character studies, it’s hard not to be astonished by Wyeth’s talent and sensitivity.
His father, N.C. Wyeth, was also a famous artist whose works are on display at the Brandywine River Museum of Art. He is perhaps best known for his illustrations of books such as Treasure Island, Rip Van Winkle, Robin Hood, and many periodicals that were popular during his time. His ability to render a scene from a story in such vivid detail that you would swear it must have really happened undoubtedly contributed to the success of many books that are now considered classics.
Also in the collections are works by Andrew Wyeth’s sister, Ann Wyeth McCoy, who was a composer and pianist as well as a painter, and his son Jamie Wyeth, whose works include documenting major 20th century political moments such as the Vietnam draft, the Wateergate hearings, and the Apollo moon mission. Wyeth’s family tree is overflowing with amazing artists, and visiting the museum truly gives one a sense of how extraordinary each of them is.
The museum is located on the banks of the Brandywine Creek, which flooded in 2021, damaging the lower levels. Visitors should spend some time walking the paths outside as well; in addition to taking in the beautiful scenery, it helps give a sense of Wyeth’s surroundings and influences. Coupled with Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, the Hagley Museum, and Tyler Arboretum, the region offers more than enough for a full weekend trip of exploring nature, history, and art.
