Caps Place - Lighthouse Point, Florida
Cap’s Place originally named Club Unique is an historic site in Lighthouse Point, Florida.
It opened in 1928 as a speakeasy, gambling den and restaurant. There was a casino upstairs and bootlegging was in its prime. The small secluded Island was ideal because of it’s easy access to the Atlantic Ocean and it’s protection by heavy vegetation growth. The powerful Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse served as the beacon during the dark nights when the rum would arrive from Bimini.
You can see why all the Mobsters hung out here because it was across the bridge from Capone Island. Of course Al Capone held court here along with the Genovese family, Meyer Laskey, Bugsy Siegel and Sy Reed. Politicians like JFK, FDR, Winston Churchill, Joe Kennedy, Admiral William “Bull” Halsey and General George C Marshall frequented here.
Sports and movie stars Joe DiMaggio, Casey Stengel, Susan Hayward, Kate Smith, George Jessel, the Maguire Sisters, Lola Falana and Francis Langford.
Cap’s Place has a personality all its own. It has stood through the Pioneer days, the Roaring Twenties, Prohibition, the Depression, World Wars and times of peace.
Today you water taxi to the island where the menu is still mainly seafood.
