Green Parrot Bar Key West, Florida
Once described as an historic mythological landmark in the form of debauchery and drink, this iconic Key West Saloon with Dive Bar credibility is where locals and visitors in the know come to catch real live music almost every day of the week.
On the Southeast corner of Southard Street and Route 1 (Whitehead Street) this 100 year-old building, that was once a grocery store, where in the back room local musicians created impromptu jam sessions often playing into the night is how it all began.
During WW II it became a hangout for submarine sailors stationed at the base only a block away. When the Navy pulled out in the seventies Key West became a haven for hippies, bikers, vagabonds and free-spirited nomads.
Later on with the discovery of Key West Pink shrimp, when the shrimpers returned the bar morphed into a shit-kickin fisherman’s honky talk, where they came with cash and laden with contraband from Jamaica to Columbia.
As Bridges widened and tourism boomed Key West finally found its place as the only Caribbean City that Americans could reach by car.
With the sounds of music, tropical breezes, whirling ceiling fans, clacking of pool balls, laughter around the darts, this funky laid-back open air bar is the place to party. This is where the locals come for poetry slams, divorce celebrations, bachelor parties, memorial services, hurricane parties, pet birthday bashes and you name it.
The Green Parrot Bar is a place for travelers to rendezvous, to mingle with the bars cast of eccentric local characters.
This is a bar with no cover and no minimum, the only thing to eat is yummy salty tasty popcorn. No Sniveling here, just a few steps off Route 1,
