Hemingway "Cats in Key West"
Mile marker 0 marks the southern end of ” Route 1″
Come visit the famous Hemingway House. Other than author Ernest Hemingway, the historic house is also known for its many cats 🐈 with an extra number of toes.
The story of Hemingway and his six-toed cats (polydactl) began with Snow White, a white polydactl kitten that he received in the 1930’s. The kitten was a gift from a sea captain, Stanley Dexter. Sailors believed these cats were good luck. Their extra toes enhanced their ability as mice and provided better balance on rough seas. They are often called “mitten cats”. To this day, many of the descendants roam the grounds of the Hemingway home and because Key West is so small it’s not unlikely that many of the cats on the island are related.
Come tour the Hemingway Home and pet a Famous Kitty Cat in beautiful Key West Florida mm 0.
