Henry Flagler died in 1913, before Route 1 had been established (1926). His impact upon St. Augustine and the State of Florida was immeasurable. Reflected across Cordova Street, in a window of modern-day St. Augustine is Flagler’s first hotel, the Ponce de Leon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponce_de_Len_Hotel In 1968, it became the centerpiece of Flagler College.
