Impact of the Pandemic
The Coronavirus Pandemic has caused trouble to a lot of businesses, schools, and families, including the isolation of people that resulted in their deaths. Michele Holbrook lost her son, Chandler Cook, who died in April 2021 from an accidental overdose at the age of 28. His mother stated, “I think he was honestly trying to numb that feeling of being isolated.” After a near-fatal heroin overdose, two stints in rehab, and six months in jail, Chandler Cook finally got sober and stayed clean for more than a year. Then came the coronavirus—and the 28-year-old lost his job, and lost his way. “I remember that feeling inside of me, just wanting to run, run as fast as I can, just to get away — that it was a dream,” Chandler’s mother said of the day she learned about Chandler’s overdose. It was “the hardest day I’ve ever had in my life.”
