Long Key Fishing Camp
Founded by railroad Tycoon Henry Flagler in the early 1900s to serve tourists arriving by train to the Keys, this small fish camp established the Florida Keys as the best fishing in America. With a two-story hotel and a deep water access marina located minutes from the Gulf Stream where the big fish play, this place became a playground for the Luminaries of the time. Andrew Mellon, William Randolph Hearst, Franklin Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, all came South to the Long Key Fish Camp
Zane Gray who was making a half million dollars a year would write his famous western novels while fishing for world record sailfish, swordfish and marlin.
The Fish Camp was destroyed by the Labor Day hurricane of 1935 as was the Overseas Railroad. The Overseas Highway US1 was built across Long Key in replacement.
This area is where Bass Pros Valhalla Island Resort a new nature-based Fishing Resort is starting to build.
