Passamaquoddy Wild Blueberry Company
Located in Columbia Falls, Maine, the Passamaquoddy Wild Blueberry Company has been in operation since 1981. Over 2000 acres of wild blueberries are harvested from the land and sold wholesale at drop-off points in Maine. You can find out more about the history of the company, and the Passamaquoddy relationship to blueberries at their website: Passamaquoddy Wild Blueberry Co.
Some interesting facts about Maine wild blueberries from the site:
- Wild blueberries aren’t planted. They grow naturally in barrens created by glaciers receding 10,000 years ago.
- Managing and harvesting this natural resource is a millennia-old tradition for the Passamaquoddy Tribe and the other Wabanaki Tribes o Maine and New Brunswick.
- Wild blueberries are smaller in size but have twice the antioxidant content as cultivated blueberries.
