Along Route 1 between Robbinston and Calais, Maine, you will find 12 granite slabs engraved with the words “Miles to Calais” and the numbers 1-12. The slabs were erected sometime between 1866 and 1882 by James Shepherd Pike, a widely known journalist, diplomat, and politician. It is said that Pike used these mile markers to gauge the performance of his horses as he raced them into Calais.
