Sign of the Month for October, 2021 -Saugus, MA
There’s something about the collection of strip malls on Route 1 in Saugus, MA that has engendered the creation of unique signs. In addition to Kowloon Restaurant, the Hilltop Restaurant (just the sign remains) and the iconic Route 1 Miniature Golf (only an orange dinosaur remains), there’s Prince Pizza – a miniature version of the Leaning Tower of Piza (Italy) displaying the name of the restaurant in bold red lettering that is illuminated at night. A lighthouse of gastronomic satisfaction. All of these great signs are in a roughly 1 mile section of the Route, which was expanded to a Super-4 (2 lanes in each direction with limited access from side streets) configuration in the 1950s.
The John Margolies photo was taken in 1978. The drive-by GoPro video was taken in April of 2019.
