Visit The Entire Solar System From Route 1
The largest 3-D scale model of the solar system in the western hemisphere is located in Maine along route 1.
Driving nearly 100 miles and see all celestial bodies except the Pluto model which is located in the Houlton Tourist Information Center and the sun, right from your car!
If you drive from end to end of the display, you will see the sun, nine planets, seven moons, and three dwarf planets. Every mile traveled equ8als 1 “astronomical unit”, or 93 million miles (named for the distance between Earth and the Sun)
Designed in 2003, this model gives a sense of the scope of our solar system and is considered a scavenger hunt on a grand scale. It was constructed without formal sponsors or grants and is a tribute to the hard work and community ethic of Northern Maine.
The entire journey takes you entirely along Route 1 through Topsfield, Houlton, Littleton, Monticello, Bridgewater, Mars Hill, and ending up in Presque Isle.
Visit the Maine Solar System website for more information.
