If you can choose just one stop in Calais, Maine, it should be this hidden gem; The Wabanaki Cultural Center and Museum. Located in the same building as the Maine State Visitor Information Center, the downstairs contains two must-see sections. The first section is a touch pool! Learn about the incredibly high and low tides that the Bay of Fundy has. There are crabs, sea sponges, starfish, and more in the tank.
Then, there is a museum that shares some history of the five tribes of native peoples in the area; the People of the First Light. Walking through the museum, learn about how the natives prepared an animal hide, made birchbark canoes, and basket making.
