    Chevalier Theatre: Medford’s Historic Stage

The Chevalier Theatre, located at 30 Forest Street in Medford, Massachusetts, is a historic venue that has been a cornerstone of the community since its dedication in 1940. Named in honor of Godfrey de Courcelles Chevalier, a Medford native and pioneering naval aviator, the theater was constructed as part of the Medford High School complex under the Works Progress Administration. Its Greek Revival exterior and Art Deco interior, featuring a double elliptical ceiling and seating for over 2,000 patrons, make it one of the largest and most architecturally significant theaters in the Greater Boston area.

After serving as a hub for school events and community performances, the theater faced a period of decline following a fire in 1965 that damaged the adjacent high school. By the early 1980s, the Chevalier had fallen into disrepair. Recognizing its cultural and historical value, local citizens and city officials formed the Chevalier Theatre Commission to spearhead restoration efforts. Through dedicated fundraising and community support, the theater was revitalized and reopened in 1992, marking a new chapter in its storied history.

In recent years, the Chevalier Theatre has undergone further renovations to enhance its facilities and ensure accessibility for all patrons. Upgrades have included the installation of air conditioning, restoration of historic windows, and improvements to seating and stage equipment. These enhancements have enabled the theater to host a diverse array of events year-round, from concerts and comedy shows to theatrical productions and community gatherings.

Today, the Chevalier Theatre stands as a testament to Medford’s commitment to preserving its cultural landmarks. Managed by Bill Blumenreich Presents, the venue continues to attract top-tier talent and audiences from across the region. With its rich history and ongoing dedication to the arts, the Chevalier remains a vibrant and cherished institution within the community.
