Conte’s Pizza is often mentioned as one of the best pizzerias and bars in New Jersey, so I decided to see if it lived up to the hype by trying their famous thin crust pizza.
When I first arrived, I was surprised. The building looks like an ordinary house from the outside, and I assumed it would be a small, cozy spot. That assumption couldn’t have been more wrong. Once inside, the space opens up into a large room with high ceilings and a sizable bar. The atmosphere alone gave me an immediate “wow” moment.
Then came the pizza—and that was an even bigger wow.
I ordered their classic thin crust bar pie, and it delivered exactly what a great New Jersey bar pie should: a super thin crust with crispy, slightly charred edges and a flavorful, well-balanced sauce. What really stood out was the pepperoni. Instead of the usual thin slices, they used thick-cut pepperoni, which added a richer, meatier bite and made the whole pie even better.
Conte’s also has a long history. Originally opened in 1936 by Sebastiano Conte as a bar with tables for card games and an outdoor bocce court, it began serving pizza on October 13, 1950—making it the first place to serve pizza in Princeton. After Sebastiano retired in 1982, his nephews, Ciro and Anthony, took over and continued the tradition.
If you’re a fan of classic New Jersey bar pies, Conte’s is absolutely worth a visit. You can learn more at their website: https://contespizzaandbarcom.wordpress.com, where they also sell branded merchandise like T-shirts.
