Before founding the Institute, Wagner hosted science lectures at his home and used specimens from his personal collection to illustrate his lessons. As interest grew, the lectures moved to larger venues and eventually to a permanent building designed by architect John McArthur Jr. After Wagner’s death in 1885, renowned biologist Joseph Leidy expanded the Institute’s scientific programs and reorganized its museum collections. He arranged exhibits according to evolutionary principles, allowing visitors to explore the development of life through geological time.
Today, the Wagner Free Institute remains a rare example of a Victorian-era scientific society. Its historic museum, library, research center, and educational facilities continue to serve the public. Housing more than 100,000 specimens, the Institute preserves both scientific collections and nineteenth-century museum practices while maintaining its long-standing commitment to free science education.
