Discover the Brooklyn Heights Promenade: Your Perfect NYC Spring Walk

With spring in the air, it’s a great time to get out for a walk. New York City is famous for its parks, but if you’re not familiar with where they are, it can be easy to miss some really great spots – that’s what we’re here to help with! One of those spots you won’t want to miss is the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, which offers a beautiful, panoramic view of Lower Manhattan and New York Harbor.

The Brooklyn Heights Promenade is an elevated pedestrian walkway in Brooklyn, New York City, extending roughly 1,826 feet above the Brooklyn–Queens Expressway (BQE). Though not officially designated as a park, it is maintained by NYC Parks. Its creation emerged from mid-20th-century debates over the routing of the BQE, as community opposition helped shift plans away from cutting directly through the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood.

During the early 1940s, residents and local leaders successfully advocated for a waterfront-aligned highway design. Engineers ultimately proposed a multi-level structure built along the escarpment, with a public walkway constructed above it. This compromise both preserved the neighborhood and introduced what would become a beloved public space. Construction began after World War II, with the Promenade opening in sections between 1950 and 1951, and the expressway completed shortly after.

Initially, some residents feared increased noise and congestion, but the Promenade quickly became a popular destination. Later efforts ensured its scenic value would be protected, including restrictions on building heights along the waterfront.

In recent decades, nearby developments like Brooklyn Bridge Park have enhanced the surrounding landscape. However, aging infrastructure has raised concerns, prompting proposals for major repairs. These plans have sparked debate, particularly over how to balance preservation, cost, and accessibility during reconstruction.

The Brooklyn Heights Promenade has been featured in many movies and television shows including my personal favorite, Boardwalk Empire, as well as Annie Hall, Saturday Night Fever, Moonstruck, Cloverfield, and The French Connection. It’s also a short walk to the Brooklyn Bridge Pier Park, so you can easily make a fun afternoon of exploring the area!
