De Niro gained sixty pounds for the role, had his teeth ground down and his body covered with tattoos (fortunately using vegetable dyes which faded in a few months).
Scorsese inherited the project from Steven Spielberg, who went on to direct Schindler’s List.
The original film from 1962 starred Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Martin Balsam, whom all made an appearance in this version.
With a production budget of $35 million, “Cape Fear” went on to generate a worldwide gross of. $183 million.
